Army GR Supra GT4 full wrap

Project Description

This quick-turnaround project was a custom designed full digital print wrap to a Toyota GR Supra GT4 race car ordered by the British Army.

Some projects test our creativity. Others test our speed. This one tested both.

When Army Sport Car Racing called us just two weeks before the final round of the British GT Championship, they had an incredible opportunity — and almost no time to make it happen. Toyota Gazoo Racing’s driver had fallen ill, and the Army team was invited to step in. It was a rare chance to put the British Army’s values and engineering talent on one of motorsport’s biggest stages — but only if we could design, print, and wrap a complete GT4 race car in under 2 weeks.

Although this project was done for motorsport, it very much is a commercial project because it is part of a fleet of race cars, one of 9 completed by Joyce Design over the past year for Army Sport Car Racing. But this one was a little special: it would carry the Army’s message to a national audience — televised, photographed, and shared thousands of times. It needed to perform visually as well as physically.

As Head of British Army Engagement, Col. Rich Hall MBE, put it:

“High-profile motorsport is the perfect platform to demonstrate shared values and to highlight the opportunities available through an Army career. By showcasing our involvement in this thrilling sport, we hope to inspire the next generation of engineers, mechanics, and leaders to join us.”

We were determined to deliver a design worthy of that mission.

FROM BRIEF TO BOLD CONCEPT

The creative brief came with a clear direction: incorporate the Army’s iconic multi-terrain camouflage pattern, merge it seamlessly with Speedworks’ race team colours and sponsor branding, and make sure it didn’t just look good standing still — it had to command attention at 160mph.

But we also had to think practically. Like any fleet or commercial vehicle, a race car needs to stay on track. Panels are often replaced or repaired between races, so we had to build in smart design solutions for quick replacement of damaged areas without compromising the overall look.

Our design team got to work, layering military inspiration with motorsport aggression. The signature camo became the foundation, while the Union Jack on the roof — subtly recoloured to match the scheme — gave the car unmistakable British character. A heavy fade to black at the front and rear helped streamline both the visual flow and the repair process, and bright Lucid Yellow accents sliced through the dark tones, catching light and camera flashes in motion.

The result was a design that balanced form, function, and national pride — a car that looked powerful whether parked in the paddock or flying down the straight.

PRECISION IN PRINT AND APPLICATION

To bring the concept to life, we selected materials that would deliver flawless finish and performance under pressure. The printed sections were produced on 3M IJ280 with a matte overlaminate for a stealth aesthetic that reflected the Army’s tactical identity. The extremities in matte black gave the vehicle a formidable stance, while overlay logos were printed on 3M IJ35 with a gloss finish to pop against the subdued background.

For the striking yellow highlights, we used 3M 2080 Gloss Lucid Yellow, applied to key body lines to amplify the car’s presence and energy. Every material was chosen for its reliability and ease of installation — the 3M MicroComply and ControlTac technologies allowed our installers to work quickly and precisely, which was vital given the tight turnaround.

The car’s aerodynamic curves and aggressive front splitter presented technical challenges, requiring expert alignment of patterns across multiple panels. Our 3M-endorsed installers used every bit of their experience to ensure a perfect result, with each camo line and contour flowing seamlessly around the bodywork.

COLLABORATION UNDER PRESSURE

Behind the scenes, the account management was just as intense as the wrap itself. With less than two weeks to go, our account manager worked hand-in-hand with our designer, turning around multiple revisions of the livery and adjusting sponsor placements within hours. Each stakeholder — Speedworks Racing, Army Sport Car Racing, the British Army Recruitment Division, and technical partners — needed sign-off before production could begin.

This demanded not just speed, but understanding — of the client’s brand, their message, and their goals. Every decision had to be right the first time. It was a true exercise in teamwork, communication, and precision.

THE RESULT

The finished car made its debut at the British GT Championship, drawing crowds both trackside and online. The design was bold, unmistakable, and perfectly in line with the Army’s values of strength, discipline, and excellence.

The exposure was enormous — thousands of spectators, TV viewers, and social media impressions saw the Army’s brand come to life in a thrilling, high-speed context. The client’s feedback said it all: “We couldn’t be happier. You delivered something truly special in record time.”

For us at Joyce Design, this project wasn’t just about wrapping a race car — it was about partnership, pride, and proving that even under the tightest deadlines, exceptional design and flawless execution can still cross the finish line first.

Testimonial: Head of British Army Engagement – Col Rich Hall MBE

When we embarked on our innovative Toyota Supra GT4 project for British GT, we needed a design partner who could understand our unique challenge: blending the British Army's brand identity with the high-octane world of motorsport to reach new audiences in an inspirational way. Joyce Designs came highly recommended by British Army Motorsport, and they proved to be absolutely the right choice.

We wanted to activate the Army brand in an unusual way and chose to wrap a race car in bespoke Army livery to project shared values around soldiering and motorsport.  We wanted to stand out in a crowded employer marketplace and disrupt the sponsor market to capture attention and promote conversations around STEM-based careers opportunities in the Army

Joyce Designs became our project partner and demonstrated exceptional account management throughout the relationship. Their team was attentive, responsive, and genuinely invested in understanding our objectives. The ease of service they provided made what could have been a complex collaboration feel seamless from start to finish.

The ideas and design creativity they brought to the project was outstanding. They expertly conjured up the perfect blend of Army camouflage with eye-catching race livery that truly captured the essence of both brands. The result was visually striking whilst maintaining the integrity and recognition of our Army identity - no easy feat in the world of motorsport design.

The quality of graphics they supplied exceeded our expectations. The vinyl wrap was robust enough to withstand the demanding racing environment, whilst the complementary positioning and balance of all elements created a cohesive, professional appearance that looked superb both on track and in static displays.

Perhaps most impressively, their turnaround time was exceptional. Our decision to proceed was left until the last minute, but Joyce Designs completed everything in a matter of days. This rapid response was crucial to our project's success and demonstrated their commitment to meeting our operational needs.

The feedback we received on how the car looked was superb. We featured prominently across social media and secured coverage in Autosport magazine. The car was definitely a fan favourite throughout the weekend with the pitlane and garage being the busiest with excited fans wanting to see the car and talk to the driver.  This helped us achieve our goal of projecting the Army brand to new audiences in an innovative and inspirational way.

Joyce Designs proved to be the supplier of choice for a reason - they delivered excellence in design, service, and execution when it mattered most.
